New Play Production Fund

Since 1994, PlayGround has been a leading incubator for some of the Bay Area’s most promising new playwrights, developing nearly 550 original short plays by 160 Bay Area emerging playwrights. In the past eight years, PlayGround itself has emerged, as one of the leading commissioners of new full-length works by Bay Area playwrights. Twenty-eight full length plays have been developed to date and six new works are currently under commission for presentation in the 2011 Best of PlayGround Festival at Thick House.

In support of these playwrights and to further encourage the production of new works by Bay Area playwrights in Bay Area theatres, PlayGround has established the New Play Production Fund. The New Play Production Fund annually distributes two awards in support of professional production of full-length works commissioned and developed by PlayGround that have not yet received their world premiere.

Round 2
Applications for Round 2 of the New Play Production Fund are now available and will be accepted through December 1, 2010. Selections will be announced by December 15, 2010. Theatres must complete production of selected plays between August 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012.

One award of $15,000 will be presented to a Bay Area theatre for a production with a budget of $45,000 or more, in a theatre of 100 seats or more, and a performance run of no less than 16 performances. A second award of $5,000 will be presented to a Bay Area theatre for a production with a budget of $15,000 or more, in a theatre of 50 seats or more, and a performance run of no less than 12 performances. Each theatre may submit only one application for each award level. Multiple theatres may submit for the same play.
